WinRAR Won’t Open After Install

Symptoms

Double-clicking a .rar or .zip opens the wrong app, or nothing at all.
The WinRAR icon does nothing when clicked.
Right-click “Extract” entries are missing from the menu.
WinRAR appears in Task Manager but no window is shown.

Why this happens

Shell integration was not refreshed — Windows still needs a restart after install.
Another archiver (7-Zip, PeaZip) grabbed the .rar/.zip file associations.
WinRAR is opening off-screen on a display that is no longer connected.
The install is partly corrupted and needs a repair.

Step-by-step fixes

Restart Windows

Shell integration (the context-menu entries and file links) only takes full effect after a reboot. Restart the PC, then double-click any archive.

Re-apply file associations

Open WinRAR from the Start menu → Options → Settings → Integration. Tick at least RAR and ZIP, enable Integrate WinRAR into shell, and click OK.

Set WinRAR as the default app

Windows Settings → Apps → Default apps, search for .rar, and choose WinRAR. Repeat for .zip and .7z if needed.

Bring an off-screen window back

If WinRAR shows in Task Manager but no window appears, select it, press Alt+Space then M, and move the mouse to drag the window back onto the visible screen.

Run as administrator once

Right-click the WinRAR shortcut → Run as administrator. If it opens this way, a permissions glitch was blocking the normal launch.

Why won’t WinRAR open after a successful install?
