Quick fix: right-click the installer → Run as administrator, and if Windows blocked it, open file Properties → tick Unblock → Apply. That fixes the majority of failed installs.

WinRAR Not Installing on Windows 11 — Fix

The installer closes, fails, or does nothing — solved step by step

If WinRAR refuses to install on Windows 11 — the installer flashes and closes, throws an error, or seems to do nothing — the cause is almost always permissions, a Windows security block, or a partly downloaded file. None of these are faults in WinRAR itself, and every one has a quick fix below.

Work through the steps in order; most users are done after step 1 or 2.

Why this happens

Step-by-step fixes

1

Run the installer as administrator

Right-click winrar-x64-720.exe and choose Run as administrator. When the User Account Control prompt appears, click Yes. This is the single most common fix, because the default install path needs elevated rights.
2

Unblock the downloaded file

Windows 11 often blocks files from the internet. Right-click the installer → Properties → at the bottom of the General tab tick UnblockApplyOK, then run it again.
3

Bypass SmartScreen safely

If you see “Windows protected your PC”, click More infoRun anyway. This is expected for any newly downloaded installer; it does not mean the file is unsafe when it came from the official win-rar.com server.
4

Re-download a clean copy

A half-finished download fails silently. Delete the existing file and download WinRAR 64-bit again from the official server. The full file is about 3.5 MB.
5

Close any running WinRAR and temporarily pause antivirus

Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), end any WinRAR processes, then pause real-time antivirus for the minute it takes to install and re-enable it straight after.
6

Free space or pick another folder

Make sure the system drive has a few hundred MB free. If C:\Program Files\ is locked down on a managed PC, point the installer at a folder inside your user profile instead.

Still stuck after every step? A clean reinstall from the official installer resolves most edge cases — see how to reinstall WinRAR without losing your settings.

Frequently asked questions

Why does WinRAR fail to install on Windows 11?
Most often the installer was not run as administrator, or Windows SmartScreen/antivirus blocked the file. Running it as administrator and unblocking the file in Properties fixes the majority of cases.
Is the SmartScreen warning a sign of a virus?
No. SmartScreen warns about any newly released or less-common download. As long as you downloaded from the official win-rar.com server, clicking More info then Run anyway is safe.
Do I need to uninstall the old WinRAR first?
No. The installer upgrades an existing copy in place and keeps your settings. Just make sure no WinRAR window is open while it installs.
WinRAR still will not install — what now?
Re-download a fresh copy, reboot Windows, then run the installer as administrator with antivirus paused. If a managed work PC blocks Program Files, install into your user folder instead.
