In short: WinRAR treats .md as a plain-text file — select it inside an archive and press Enter or the internal viewer to read it without extracting. It shows the raw Markdown source, not a rendered page.

WinRAR Markdown Guide

Preview, bundle and document with Markdown (.md) files

Markdown (.md) is just structured plain text, so it works smoothly with WinRAR’s built-in viewer. For power users this means three practical things: reading documentation inside an archive without extracting it, bundling a README with what you compress, and keeping plain-text notes via archive comments.

Good to know: WinRAR does not render Markdown into formatted text — it shows the raw .md source in its built-in text viewer. That is still useful: you can read a README inside an archive without unpacking it, and ship documentation alongside your files.

What you’ll need

How to work with Markdown in WinRAR

1

Preview a .md file without extracting

Open the archive in WinRAR, select the .md file, and press Enter (or right-click → View file). WinRAR’s internal viewer shows the raw text instantly — handy for checking a README before unpacking.
2

Make WinRAR always use its text viewer

Go to Options → Settings → Viewer and choose Internal viewer (or set an external editor). This controls what opens when you view a .md or other text file inside an archive.
3

Bundle a README.md with your files

When creating an archive, simply include your README.md alongside the content. Anyone who opens the archive can read it in place — a clean way to ship instructions with a download.
4

Use the archive comment for quick notes

WinRAR can store a plain-text comment inside the archive itself: Tools → Archive comment (or the Comment tab when creating it). It is plain text, so you can paste Markdown-style notes there as a lightweight changelog.
5

View the comment later

Open the archive and use Tools → Show information or the comment pane to read the stored notes. Comments travel inside the archive, so they sync and back up with it.
6

See the formatted version when needed

For a rendered preview, extract the .md and open it in a Markdown editor or browser extension. WinRAR’s role is fast in-archive reading and bundling, not formatting.

Yes. WinRAR treats .md as plain text and opens it in its internal viewer when you select the file and press Enter. It shows the raw Markdown source rather than a formatted page.
Does WinRAR render Markdown formatting?
No. WinRAR displays the raw text only. To see formatted Markdown, extract the file and open it in a Markdown editor or browser.
How do I read a README inside an archive without extracting it?
Open the archive, select the README.md, and press Enter or choose View file. WinRAR shows its contents immediately without unpacking the whole archive.
